Prevention is better than cure
Excessive flange corrosion is hazardous, costly and sadly all too common.
The annular gap around the outside diameter of a flange joint allows the ingress of debris and moisture, which causes the degradation of the gasket and in turn creates corrosion damage to the flange and seal.
The more hostile the working conditions, the worse the problem can be, and when corrosion or gasket degradation causes leakage that means unscheduled down-time and loss of production.
James Walker has now launched a simple solution to this problem. As part of the company's broader Total Flange Management initiative, a range of inexpensive flange protection products is supplied, which can be easily fitted or retro-fitted to flange joints without even the need to break the joint.
The stainless steel flange protection band with closed-cell neoprene liner can be fitted in a matter of minutes, is suitable for operating temperatures up to 120°C, lasts for years and is reusable, yet costs less than a tenth of the outlay for new gaskets, bolts and remachining of corroded flange faces.
Developed in partnership with key clients from the hydrocarbon processing industry as an extension of the successful Joint Integrity Programme, Total Flange Management moves on from the specification and use of correct gasket materials and advanced RotaBolt® tension control fasteners through to flange protection bands, isolation kits and bolt protection caps.
These Best Practice initiatives are being welcomed by a growing number of processing plants, due to the maintenance cost savings and safety improvements created in addition to the logistical simplification offered by a James Walker single source management solution.
